Dr. Lyle was an extraordinary eye surgeon, a visionary leader, and a beloved figure within the community. His pioneering work in ophthalmology touched the lives of tens of thousands of people across the region, improving vision and restoring sight with unmatched skill and dedication.
Dr. Randy Carter, who worked alongside Dr. Lyle for over 35 years, expressed, “W. Andrew Lyle M.D. was an amazingly gifted eye surgeon. He was the last of the great generalists in an era before the current specialization in eye care. He did corneal, refractive, cataract, and retinal procedures and did them all very well. He continued to adapt and improve throughout his career and was constantly on the leading edge, adopting new technology, techniques, and devices into his practice. Due to his knowledge and expertise, tens of thousands of people throughout the Intermountain West have been blessed with better vision.”
Dr. Lyle’s legacy is evident in the foundation he built at The Eye Institute of Utah and the Surgicare Center of Utah. “He established the foundation and vision for The Eye Institute of Utah and the Surgicare Center of Utah. At one point, overseeing the main office in Salt Lake City and five satellite clinics in southern Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming,” said Dr. Carter.
Dr. Lyle’s pursuit of excellence, whether in the operating room or in pursuit of his passions, left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Dr. Carter continued, “He always strived to be the best at everything he did, whether it was ophthalmology, tennis, golf, or flying airplanes. His tenacity in those areas was only matched by his warmth and kindness to others and his devotion to his wife, Lori, and children.”
Dr. Lyle’s remarkable contributions to eye care will continue to live on in the practice he founded and the countless lives he transformed. He will be deeply missed by his former patients, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
